Dragunov is one of the most played characters in Tekken and falls under the top 3 tournament characters which have led professional players like JDCR and NOBI win a lot of tournaments. As a Dragunov main myself, after I tried several different characters I still find Dragunov to be the complete fighter and I have 7 Reasons that explain why he is the most badass character in the game.
Reason #1. A lot of pressure tools
Dragunov’s Pressure tools like Running 2 and Back 1+2 are great powerful attacks that give him a lot of frame advantage. Both of this attack do a lot of damage and the Running 2 is an outstanding move which a lot of professionals like JDCR and NOBI do always to keep the opponent under constant pressure.
Surely it takes a lot of time to master the Running 2 from a point-blank distance but the Back 1+2 is a strong attack when Dragunov’s opponent is near the wall.
Reason #2. Lots of pokes
His pokes are several with a lot of mids, highs and lows. Dragunov’s Down 2 is a fantastic move which tracks the opponents and is too fast to block every time. Even those who are masters of this game can’t block this move every time and this move helps you to do a lot of different mixups which keep letting your opponent guessing all the time. You can either do While Standing 4, or a Running 2 if you have mastered the move. Or you can just simply do other strings as well.
Dragunov’s Down Back 2-1-2, Back 4-2-1, Back 1-2, Down 4-1-3 are some fantastic strings which target opponent’s every body part and doesn’t let your opponent duck for safety.
Reason #3. Good frame advantage
Dragunov’s strings like 2-1, 3-1 or 1-3 are very fast moves to punish opponent’s short strings and will probably hit most of the time. Although, these moves target only the high part of the opponent’s body, constantly doing them for making pressure on the opponent will give you an upper hand on frames.
Reason #4. Lots of combos for wall carry
The best part of Tekken is its combo. There are so many combos that each character can perform but the damage is maximized when the opponent splats on a wall which gives additional time for doing strings that can deal with massive damage.
It’s no unique thing that Dragunov can do good wall damage but unique are his combos which he can adjust to in any situation in order to carry away his opponent as far as he can with the Forward 3, Crouch Dash Cancel, 1 or 3-1.
Reason #5. Punishment in every condition
It’s true that every character has punishment moves but Dragunov’s punishment is fast and applies in every condition. Be it a fast move that your opponent does or a slow one. Be it a high move or a low one, Dragunov has different punishments that have the frame advantage in every condition. He can do shoulder attack, While standing 1-3, While standing 1-2 or While standing 2 to launch the opponent into the air but it’s slower than the other three punishments. So, use it only when your opponents attack frame is above 15.
Reason #6. Practical Rage Drive
There are characters like Devil Jin which have shitty Rage Drive application even though they are powerful characters but in this scenario, Dragunov is superior to them as he is one of the most successful characters who can use his Rage Drive in normal circumstance as well as in combos. You can either use the Rage drive at the beginning to launch the opponent high into the air and start a full combo or you can end the combo with it following by a Back 1+2 or Foot Stomp which will deal a massive amount of damage as you can see from the above GIF.
Reason #7. Deceiver
Winning a fight requires deceivement which Dragunov is equipped with. Although, it’s very rare to see most of the players doing the deceiving moves because of the risk but the reward is much better if you confuse your opponent by doing in between the mixups. Doing deceiving moves such as F-F 2 Cancel on the opponent when he is near the wall, will make your opponent hesitant to attack first thinking that you are going to do the F-F 2 but you can cancel it and do a completely different move which can result in winning the match.
